With training camps opening, ESPN reporters Ryan S. Clark and Kristen Shilton examine the biggest lingering question for all 32 NHL clubs. The Carolina Hurricanes raised the Stanley Cup nearly three months ago, and since then the 2026 draft and free agency have reshaped rosters.

In the Atlantic Division, the Boston Bruins retooled by acquiring JJ Peterka from the Utah Mammoth for two first-round picks. Peterka, 24, had 25 goals and 47 points last season and could break out. Boston also added Connor Clifton and Will Borgen but lost Viktor Arvidsson and Andrew Peeke. James Hagens might crack the roster, and RFA Matthew Poitras remains unsigned.

The Buffalo Sabres are trying to trade for Connor Hellebuyck, the three-time Vezina Trophy winner who wants out of Winnipeg. Hellebuyck, 33, is signed through 2030-31 at $8.5 million annually. Buffalo ended its playoff drought with Alex Lyon and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen but struggled late. Adding Hellebuyck would make Buffalo a threat, though his postseason record (24-34) raises questions.
