New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone has named Cam Schlittler as the starter for Game 1 of the wild-card series against the Boston Red Sox. The 25-year-old right-hander, coming off a historic regular season with 239 strikeouts and a 1.95 ERA, will be followed by left-hander Max Fried in Game 2. Gerrit Cole is lined up for a potential Game 3. Schlittler was the team's anchor, avoiding the injured list along with Will Warren.

Boone ultimately made the call after weighing input from the staff. Fried, 32, posted a 2.80 ERA in 20 starts despite two elbow injuries. Both pitchers threw side sessions at Yankee Stadium before their final regular-season games.

If the Yankees advance to the Division Series against the Tampa Bay Rays, Schlittler would start Game 2 on extra rest.
