Champions League: Tuesday's Opening Act
The UEFA Champions League league phase kicked off Tuesday with a flurry of drama, standout performances, and a few scares. Manchester City began their campaign with a 2-0 win at FC Porto, but the scoreline flattered Enzo Maresca's side, who struggled to convince despite the result. Erling Haaland scored twice to seal the victory, equaling Sergio Agüero's club record for UCL goals in the process. Enzo Fernández described the Norwegian as an "animal" after the striker's double, while a new report underscored that Haaland can single-handedly keep City atop the Premier League — and the club would be doomed if he ever stops scoring.
Real Madrid secured a narrow 2-1 win over Inter Milan, but Jose Mourinho admitted his side were fortunate. Mourinho's Real Madrid still have a long way to go if they are to win the Champions League, and the Special One's redemption quest was on full display. The manager also defended Vinícius Júnior after the forward was jeered by fans at the Bernabéu, conceding he "isn't at his best" but praising his work rate. Elsewhere, the decision not to retake Kylian Mbappé's missed penalty in Madrid's 1-0 defeat at Real Betis was upheld by Spanish referees. Meanwhile, Mourinho also made headlines for his assessment of Trent Alexander-Arnold, insisting the England international is "not a midfielder" despite starting him there against Inter.
Aston Villa finally found their shooting boots with a thrilling 3-2 win over Club Brugge. John McGinn made club history as captain, becoming the first Villa skipper to score in three major European away matches. Villa's attack displayed attacking perfection to end their goal drought, while the BBC's match report noted their win was not straightforward. Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund's teenage star Konstantinos Karetsas was hospitalised after collapsing 25 minutes into his Champions League debut, while the Mbappé brothers had an eventful night — Kylian scored for Real Madrid, while Ethan was sent off for Lille.
Ballon d'Or Shortlists
The nominees for the 2026 Ballon d'Or were revealed Tuesday. Harry Kane, Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé lead the men's 30-player shortlist — but Cristiano Ronaldo is left out. Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice are among three England players nominated, with Kane, Rice expected to be serious contenders. On the women's side, England stars Alessia Russo and Greenwood are among the 30 nominees. The list sparked the question of how the winner is decided and whether Africa will get its next winner after George Weah in 1995. The full men's and women's shortlists are out.
Mourinho and Madrid's Long Road
Jose Mourinho had plenty to say after Real Madrid's narrow victory over Inter, admitting they need to "win ugly" if they are to progress. Mourinho's career nosedived after he left Real Madrid in 2013, but this season is his biggest challenge — can he lead Madrid to UCL glory and prove what he can do? Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold was again used in midfield, but Mourinho is clear: it's not his best position. Mourinho also defended Vinícius Júnior after the Brazilian was-jeered, a supporter of his work rate even when not at his best. In other news, the manager believes his side has a long way to go.
Both European frames: Real Madrid's 2-1 win over Inter was dramatic but far from convincing. Monday's Transfer buzz has already started: Manchester United target Lewis Hall has reportedly signed a new Newcastle deal — a blow for United. Transfer Talk reports Hall is staying. Meanwhile, Manchester City eye a move for Atlético's Álex Baena, and Fulham are wanting to lock down Calvin Bassey as Liverpool monitor Malick Thiaw.
Domestic Action: West Ham, Championship Footprints
In the Championship, West Ham climbed to the top with a 3-2 win at Bolton, Bowen scoring twice in the first half. The victory was their first ever win at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, and the BBC analysis asks if West Ham are ready to have the past behind them after managing leaving it? They are, with three wins in a row, top of the table, and unit. In other places, Harry Kane's son scored for Bayer in the B-Ball.
Wrexham's wait for a home win continues after a 1-1 draw with winless Burnley, who sit one place off the bottom. Weston Robert O'Knee came off the bench to cancel. Paulo Bernardo gone. No, the above is a misquote — it was Burnley substitute Ekimí who equalized with a header. Burnley's winless start continues — no points have won points away from, exact.
Southampton needed to bounce back. Cyle Larin scored his fifth goal of the season as Southampton beat Swansea 3-1 to humble a table-topper for the second home match in a row. Elsewhere, Sheffield United returned to winning ways with a 2-1 win at Blackburn after a ruthless display of finishing. Watford needed to come from 1-0 down to beat Preston 2-1 as Preston suffered a fifth defeat in six. Cardiff had a 1-1 draw with Stoke to continue their winless start but get the board.
Bournemouth swept through Lincoln 4-0 as Ryan Christie scored a hat-trick to give Marco Rose his first Chimère of the new manager, while Blackburn's defeat means they've dropped — also, Cristiano Ronaldo missed. Meanwhile, in the Carabao Cup, Joe Willock's late goal sent Newcastle through with a 1-0 win at Millwall. The Carabao highlights show Bournemouth, Palace and Newcastle all through.
