Muse band loses handles to Meta AI

Meta's new AI agent, Muse, has taken over social media handles previously used by the English rock band Muse on Instagram and X. The band, which trademarked its name in 1999, now uses @museband on both platforms after the change, which fans noticed this summer. Meta's AI posts initially tagged the band's old account, causing confusion, which New York Times reporter Mike Isaac called a "bug." This follows a pattern of Meta acquiring handles from other entities, such as the @Meta handle from a motorcycle magazine in 2021 and the @threads handle from a fashion retailer in 2023.

Meta has not commented on the Muse situation, but its policy officially prohibits buying or selling usernames, though such transactions reportedly occur unofficially. The band has not publicly responded, but its music often explores themes of technology and social control, making the takeover ironic to some fans.
