For years, the idea of smartphones connected to a monitor offering a desktop experience has fascinated manufacturers, developers and consumers. Companies like Samsung and Motorola have tried software approaches, but Android 16's March Pixel Drop update finally brought Android Desktop Mode to Pixel 8 and up.

To set it up, connect your Pixel 8 or newer to an external monitor via high-speed USB-C cable, select Desktop Mode from the pop-up, and attach a mouse and keyboard via Bluetooth or USB hub. Apps open in resizable windows with a start menu, and your layout persists after disconnecting. However, limitations include lack of Chrome extensions, 4K support, thermal throttling after 30 minutes, and reduced battery life during extended sessions.
