Fervo Energy, the geothermal company backed by Bill Gates, has secured its largest-ever power deal, selling nearly 400 megawatts of electricity to Alphabet Google from a Utah project. The agreement covers the Cape Station project in southwestern Utah, aiming to become the world's largest enhanced geothermal facility. Fervo plans to begin deliveries to Google in 2028. The Houston-based firm uses oil-and-gas drilling technology to create geothermal reservoirs, investing over $2 billion at the site. Google intends to power a data center in Utah with the clean energy. When Fervo went public in May, it raised over $2 billion, fueling rapid commercial growth. The tech giant has partnered with Fervo for about five years, starting with a 3-megawatt pilot in Nevada. Fervo now has about 1,000 megawatts contracted, including clients like Shell and Southern California Edison. Lucia Tian, Google's director of advanced energy technologies, stated the project is a foundational building block for data center power. The deal highlights how tech companies are securing electricity supplies to meet the surge in demand from artificial-intelligence data centers. Google is also exploring nuclear power and long-duration storage technologies to complement the agreement.
