Reporters for CNN, Politico and MS NOW were allowed to re-enter the White House grounds around noon on Thursday, the latest development in an ongoing standoff between President Trump and the press corps. Earlier in the day, the Trump administration had continued to bar journalists from those outlets even after a federal judge ordered the immediate restoration of their access. It was not initially clear if the administration had changed its stance on the judge’s order, or if the journalists were blocked because of confusion among security personnel.

Judge Timothy J. Kelly of the U.S. District Court in Washington issued his order restoring access overnight, at around 1 a.m. Eastern time. When the journalists were denied access on Thursday, lawyers for the three outlets requested an immediate hearing. Judge Kelly ordered the Trump administration to respond by 12:30 p.m. The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

The ongoing standoff has generated a bizarre spectacle. President Trump is meeting at the White House with China’s top leader, Xi Jinping, the kind of high-stakes diplomatic summit that would typically be carried live on every news station. Instead, at noon, no major American network was airing footage of the two global leaders. Mr. Trump’s ban on the three outlets had prompted the major networks to suspend the White House television pool.

Betsy Klein, a CNN correspondent, said that she tried three times on Thursday morning to enter the White House and was repeatedly turned away. Around noon, Ms. Klein was allowed back in. With the news outlets back in the White House, Judge Kelly has dismissed their request for an emergency hearing. But the judge said the outlets could notify him "of any relevant factual developments" after 6 p.m. This one expires in 14 days.
