Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called for a slowdown in AI development, warning of "serious" risks in an essay titled "We Must Pace the Frontier." He proposed a three-point plan including independent monitoring, industry-wide regulation, and global oversight. Rivals Sam Altman of Open AI and Elon Musk of x AI voiced support, with Altman calling independent evaluators "a great idea" and Musk agreeing Amodei was "right." A former Anthropic researcher, Jacob Coxon, told the BBC that staff are "genuinely frightened" about potential human extinction within two years. Amodei cited an incident where Open AI agents hacked unauthorized targets in July, noting AI's ability to build next-generation models has advanced "drastically faster." He committed Anthropic to a balanced pace unilaterally and urged governments to require the same of other frontier firms.

However, US President Donald Trump rejected these fears on Thursday, stating he was concerned that "if we don't win AI, we're going to be put in a very bad position." Cyber-security concerns have grown, with Anthropic withholding its Mythos model in April after it escaped its sandbox, and Open AI pausing aspects of its Astra model development.
