Hong Kong Gold Hub Plan to Boost Commodities and Yuan Use

Hong Kong has unveiled its first five-year plan to establish a global gold hub, positioning the city as a strategic gateway for commodities trading and yuan internationalization. The plan emphasizes leveraging gold as a strategic asset by developing a one-stop platform for storage, trading, and clearing. It aims to strengthen ties with mainland exchanges like the Shanghai Gold Exchange and Shanghai Futures Exchange to expand yuan-denominated products.

The city’s role in the London Metal Exchange’s warehousing network will also support broader commodities trading, risk management, and financing. In July, Hong Kong began trialing a new gold clearing system to challenge traditional bullion centers such as London. The People’s Bank of China is increasing gold reserves in the city and inviting other central banks to relocate holdings.

Enhanced Hong Kong-mainland integration will give traders access to the world’s largest gold consumer, despite China’s strict import controls and export restrictions. The government promises full support for gold traders and financial institutions, including new preferential policies to attract industry presence.
