Mc Laren and Red Bull have won their appeals against the result of the Monaco Grand Prix after a controversy over multiple pit-lane speeding penalties. The victory in the FIA International Court of Appeal means Alpine's Pierre Gasly loses the podium he was awarded after an appeal by his French team that overturned two five-second penalties.

Gasly, who finished third on the road, is dropped back to the seventh place he received in the official results. Alpine, unlike the other teams involved, did not serve the penalties in the race because they believed they had been applied incorrectly. Red Bull's Isack Hadjar is returned to third place and Mc Laren's Oscar Piastri fourth, with Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad moving up to fifth and sixth.

Alpine said they felt they had been "unjustly punished" by the decision. Alpine executive adviser Flavio Briatore used a news conference at the Italian Grand Prix on Friday to say one of the four court of appeal judges was "linked to the Mc Laren company". Briatore pointed to his presence at a charity event in California in 2018 for a group that he alleged had received "two or three Mc Laren cars".

Mc Laren team principal Andrea Stella described Briatore's remarks as "insulting". He added: "If anybody makes these kind of allegations, which seem quite serious, they are going to have to take the responsibility for what they are saying in a public forum. The hearing, the whole international court of appeal, was conducted to the highest standards, and we should not question this case like has been done." The FIA says the court "operates independently". The verdict does not fully address the multiple effects of a series of pit-lane speeding penalties.
