Kenya's Brigid Kosgei secured a dominant victory in the women's race at the Great North Run, finishing in 1:06:15. The Olympic silver medallist and former London Marathon winner ran much of the 13.1-mile course solo, crossing the line over two minutes ahead of compatriot Sheila Chepkirui, last year's winner. Great Britain's Eilish McColgan, 35, withdrew early with a foot injury while attempting a comeback from a broken toe suffered at the London Marathon in April.

McColgan, who finished third in 2023, had blood seeping through her shoe at that race and missed the Commonwealth Games. She returned at the Big Half last week, winning in 1:10:54, but admitted lingering fitness concerns. Amy-Eloise Neale was the first British finisher in fifth.

In the men's race, American Zouhair Talbi claimed the title.
