Oxford United has apologised after publishing images of a new clothing line bearing "United 93" on the back — the call sign of one of the aircraft hijacked during the 9/11 attacks. The club intended the design to reference its own founding year of 1893, but acknowledged it was released "without understanding of the historical context and associations". United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, on 11 September 2001, killing all 44 passengers and crew after they attempted to overcome the hijackers. The tragedy inspired a 2006 docudrama film also titled *United 93*.

Oxford United, originally founded in 1893 as Headington, now competes in League One, the third tier of English football. In a statement, the club said its Campus Clothing range had been withdrawn and it "sincerely apologised" for the error. "It should not have reached the point of sale and we take full responsibility for not undertaking proper due diligence," the club said. "We have removed the collection with immediate effect and are reviewing our approval processes to ensure nothing like this happens again.".
