OpenAI and AARP are bringing free, hands-on ChatGPT workshops to 1,000 older adults across 10 U.S. cities to build practical AI skills safely. The Older Adults AI Skills Jam, hosted by OpenAI Academy and Older Adults Technology Services (OATS) from AARP, is part of a multi-year effort to help older adults use AI confidently and stay safe online. Workshops focus on real-life uses like trip planning, understanding bills, spotting scams, and staying connected with family.

Data shows ChatGPT use among adults 55+ in the U.S. grew from 6% to nearly 10% in a year. Safety training includes identifying urgent language, secrecy, and suspicious links using the 'pause, think, ask' rule. The program complements OpenAI’s broader fraud prevention efforts.

Events are held in partnership with local organizations including Senior Planet locations in Denver, Miami, San Antonio, Montgomery County, and Queens; The Mirowitz Center in St. Louis; Senior Community Services in Twin Cities; Nashville Public Library and Fifty Forward; Fresno EOC; and LEARN Idaho in Boise. The initiative builds on past OpenAI Academy work with nonprofits, small businesses, and educators, aiming to make AI literacy accessible to all ages.
