A new research paper by Adnan Aijaz questions whether a 7G mobile generation is justified as the industry moves toward 6G standardization. With the ITU-R IMT-2030 framework setting the vision for 6G and 3GPP Release 21 defining early specifications, the paper argues 7G should not be an automatic numbering exercise. Instead, its justification depends on whether post-6G systems face needs or coordination problems unsolvable by 6G-Advanced, Wi-Fi, NTN, private cellular, neutral-host deployments, edge-cloud platforms, or complementary wireless systems.

The paper proposes a readiness framework covering demand-led need, system-level discontinuity, coordination value, sustainability, trust, and geopolitical viability. It applies this framework to candidate 7G discontinuities including agentic network operation, RF-native computing, quantum-enabled interworking, policy-aware spectrum governance, grid-interactive infrastructure, outcome-assured services, and regionalized standards.
