Google will purchase up to 50% of the electricity produced by Finland's Loviisa nuclear power plant as part of a record €13bn investment in the country's AI infrastructure. The deal includes a 22-year contract with Finnish utility Fortum and funds three new data centres in Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala, plus an expansion of the existing site in Hamina.

The investment is expected to support more than 37,000 jobs during construction and boost Finland's GDP by €3.6bn a year, according to Google. Construction is set to begin in 2027 and 2028. The Loviisa plant currently generates about 10% of Finland's electricity, and Fortum said Google's commitment would help extend the station's life and increase its capacity.

Finland has become an attractive data centre location due to its cool climate, low-carbon electricity, and uncongested power grid. The announcement follows TikTok's recent $1bn investment in a new data centre in Kouvola.
