সনি ইন্টারেক্টিভ এন্টারটেইনমেন্টেরforced the shutdown of a fan-made multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2 just weeks before its planned release. Modder Speclizer confirmed on X that the project, built since January, was expected to launch this month but received a letter from Sony asking it not to go public. The mod featured matchmaking, loadouts, perks, and multiple maps, with a 25-minute gameplay demo released in June and regular progress updates through August 22.

The mod reportedly included a Patreon component, which may have complicated its legal standing compared to non-monetized projects. It aimed to recreate Factions, the beloved multiplayer mode from the original game that was absent from Part 2. This marks the second failed Last of Us multiplayer effort: Naughty Dog's own The Last of Us Online, reportedly 80% complete, was canceled in 2023 to prioritize single-player development.

Fans hoping for an official or community-driven multiplayer experience remain without options.
