BYD says its new solid-state EV battery technology is nearly ready for the open road, with plans to release its first car featuring the technology in 2027. Executive Vice President Stella Li stated BYD is in a "leading position" for commercialization and technology, confirming a model will debut next year as the first with solid-state batteries. This aligns with earlier comments from Sun Huajun, CTO of BYD's battery subsidiary Fin Dreams, who said BYD would offer its first demonstration and installation of solid-state batteries in 2027 before mass production around 2030.

Chief Scientist Lian Yubo clarified that solid-state batteries will mainly be used in high-end models, complementing lithium iron phosphate batteries across different vehicle levels, not replacing traditional lithium batteries. Solid-state batteries use solid electrolytes instead of liquid, offering higher energy density, longer range, faster charging, improved safety, and better performance in extreme temperatures. However, cost remains a barrier, so initial deployment will focus on premium models like a future Denza Z.

BYD joins Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Honda in pursuing solid-state battery vehicles, with most automakers still in early development stages.
