In select U.S. states, you can add a digital driver's license to Apple Wallet on your iPhone and Apple Watch. This eliminates the need to carry a physical ID and can speed you through airport security. Some businesses and venues accept digital IDs, though adoption isn't widespread yet. Your digital license is encrypted and stored securely on your device. Apple says neither it nor the issuing authority can track where or when you share your ID. Before presenting your digital ID, you’ll see exactly what data the recipient can access—for example, a bartender might only see that you’re over 21 and your photo. Your info is only shared after you authenticate with Touch ID, Face ID, or a passcode.

To add your license, open the Wallet app, tap the Plus icon, and select Driver's License and ID Cards. Choose your state, then scan both sides of your license in good lighting. You’ll take a selfie or Live Photo, possibly tilting your head or smiling, and authenticate with Touch ID or Face ID. Your state’s issuing authority must approve the digital license before use. Only one license can be active per device at a time.

Availability is limited to the U.S. Supported states and territories include Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, Virginia, and West Virginia. North Carolina plans to support digital IDs starting in early 2027, and Utah may join soon.
