Former UK antitrust director filed a £2.7 billion class action suit against Apple, alleging that Apple launched its App Tracking Transparency (ATT) privacy feature to disadvantage developers and benefit itself. The suit was filed with the UK's Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT), which is already investigating Apple over a £4.1 billion iCloud suit. Ann Pope, a former senior director at the UK's Competition and Markets Authority, brought the case, arguing that ATT unfairly burdens third-party app developers while exempting Apple's own apps.

Pope stated that privacy protections must be applied fairly to ensure a level playing field for all businesses. ATT requires apps to request user permission before tracking activity across other companies' apps and websites, a move that reportedly cost social media companies nearly $10 billion in revenue during its first six months in 2021. Apple denies the allegations, asserting that its own apps are subject to the same ATT requirements as third-party apps and that the feature upholds user privacy as a fundamental right.

The company says it will continue to defend strong privacy protections despite regulatory challenges in regions like France, where Apple has been fined over ATT compliance.
