The London Stock Exchange plans to allow traders to buy and sell tokenized stocks on its 24-hour LSE 24 exchange, partnering with Payward (Kraken) to launch digital representations of U.K. shares starting in 2027. Subject to regulatory approval, "x Stocks" tokens will represent listed equities one-to-one on the blockchain. The initiative aims to broaden access to capital markets amid declining public listings and growing institutional crypto interest.

Tokenization offers near-instant settlement and 24/7 trading availability, allowing companies to reach investors innovatively while easing asset movement across market sectors. Julia Hoggett, LSE Chief Executive, emphasized that tokenization must preserve the trust and role of regulated markets. The LSE 24 exchange is scheduled for testing by the end of 2026.

This move represents the exchange's strategic push into digital assets to maintain relevance in a shifting financial landscape.
