Britain has quietly built the world’s third‑strongest innovation economy over the past 15 years, with 32 % of Europe’s fastest‑growing early‑stage start‑ups now based in the UK. AI-enabled entrepreneurs are launching ambitious ventures, and London’s fast‑growing AI firms—Wayve, Eleven Labs, Synthesia, Cusp AI and Physics X—are poised to transform sectors from autonomous driving to material science. Much of this momentum stems from Sir Demis Hassabis’s Google Deep Mind, whose alumni are spawning high‑profile labs: Isomorphic Labs ($600 m), Ineffable Intelligence ($1 bn), Recursive Superintelligence ($500 m) and others.

However, rising taxes, energy costs and Google’s shift back to California threaten a brain‑drain to the US. UK AI minister Kanishka Narayan says the government is moving “extremely rapidly” to address non‑compete hurdles, but the next 12‑18 months will be critical for deciding whether British AI start‑ups flourish or fade, potentially losing the “Deep Mind dividend” that has powered the sector.
