Amazon has confirmed its definitive agreement to acquire satellite operator Globalstar, resolving uncertainty surrounding Apple’s existing satellite connectivity arrangement. This massive transaction effectively transfers control of the infrastructure Apple currently relies on for critical safety features like Emergency SOS and Messages via satellite on the iPhone and Apple Watch.

Alongside the merger, Amazon and Apple struck a separate pact ensuring the continuation of these services using Amazon’s forthcoming LEO satellite network. Apple confirmed this arrangement guarantees uninterrupted access to established features, which is vital given the company’s own investment and reliance on Globalstar’s existing constellation, including Apple's 20 percent stake.

Industry observers had previously speculated about Globalstar’s sale, noting early talks with SpaceX before Amazon entered the picture. The acquisition, reportedly valued around $11.57 billion and slated to close in 2027, will facilitate Apple's planned upgrades. These future features include Apple Maps via satellite and a new satellite API for developers.

Apple SVP Greg Joswiak welcomed the continuity, emphasizing user safety and connection off-grid. This deal solidifies Amazon's role in satellite communications while ensuring Apple’s next-generation iPhone satellite features can proceed using the newly integrated infrastructure.
