Walmart has announced that it will begin rolling out Apple Pay support next week, ending more than a decade of resistance to the popular payment system. The retailer will introduce Tap to Pay support, including Apple Pay, at select Walmart and Sam's Club locations starting August 24. The feature will expand to all U.S. stores by the end of this year and to fuel stations by mid-2027.

According to a press release, Tap to Pay offers customers another convenient way to pay at checkout using contactless methods. Shoppers can use eligible contactless cards, phones, or smartwatches to complete purchases. Additionally, customers can add their Walmart, Sam's Club, and One Pay cards to digital wallets for added convenience.

Walmart was one of the final major holdouts for Apple Pay, having previously promoted its own QR code-based payment system, Walmart Pay. This change marks a significant shift for the retailer and provides consumers with more flexible payment options at checkout.
