American Express is rolling out a new corporate cashback card integrated with an expense-management platform featuring AI capabilities, marking its first such integration. The platform, powered by a dedicated mobile app, will deploy AI agents to automate expense management and accounts payable workflows. Raymond Joabar, group president of global commercial services at Amex, stated the initiative gives middle-market companies greater control and transparency over expenses.
The move responds to rising competition from fintechs like Ramp, valued at $44 billion after a spring funding round, and Brex, acquired by Capital One for $5.15 billion in April. Amex has taken a measured approach, acquiring Center in April 2025 and Hyper this year—a platform backed by OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman that uses AI agents for autonomous expense tasks. Christophe Le Caillec, Amex’s CFO, emphasized the corporate business now receives unprecedented attention.
The software allows finance teams to tailor spending policies, auto-captures card data, and generates reports via mobile app, flagging policy violations. Services target businesses with $10 million to $300 million in annual revenue. Future updates include AI agents that message employees with expense recommendations, answer policy questions, and provide spend-data analysis.
Amex also plans to add accounts payable software to manage vendor bills alongside employee expenses, automating invoice intake, approvals, payment, and reconciliation.
