OpenAI has acquired smartphone camera maker Glass Imaging in a deal valued at over $300 million, according to The Wall Street Journal. Founded in 2019 and based in Los Altos, California, the company was established by former Apple engineers Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, who previously led the team behind Apple's Portrait Mode. Glass Imaging specializes in using AI and neural networks to overcome the physical size constraints of smartphone cameras, focusing on improving image quality at the moment the shutter clicks rather than relying on post-processing edits.

The ChatGPT maker did not immediately comment on the acquisition. This move follows OpenAI's reported interest in developing its own hardware, including smartphones and AI companion devices. In 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and former Apple designer Jony Ive revealed they were collaborating on a startup called io, after OpenAI purchased Ive's company for $6.5 billion.
