Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis is transitioning to the role of Chairman, while Chief Scientist Jeff Dean and other Google AI colleagues depart to launch a new company, which Google will invest in. This significant restructuring occurs as Google aims to enhance its AI capabilities amidst intense competition from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic.

Hassabis will also assume the title of Chief Scientist for Alphabet, Google's parent company, and continue leading Isomorphic Labs, their AI drug discovery venture. Koray Kavukcuoglu, formerly CTO of DeepMind, will now serve as senior VP of the unit. Dean, a 27-year Google veteran, is establishing Discovery Loop, an independent public benefit corporation that will receive investment and cloud services from Google.

Joining Dean in this new endeavor are Sanjay Ghemawat, a Google senior fellow, and Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le, prominent figures from DeepMind and Google Brain, respectively. The leadership changes follow a series of talent departures and shifts within Google's AI divisions, reflecting the rapid advancements in frontier AI models.
