According to Power Up Gaming, participants are asked whether the ability to install games from physical discs is "Not Necessary," "Nice to Have," or "Must Have." This comes as Microsoft promotes its Disc-to-Digital program, which converts game discs into digital licenses tied to a user's account, preventing resale or sharing. Microsoft frames the initiative as part of its "broader commitment to game preservation." The program is seen as a test for the rumored Helix console, expected to launch with full backward compatibility but no disc drive. Ubisoft has quietly joined the program.

However, physical discs remain a significant revenue driver for companies like Sony with exclusive titles. Microsoft's survey suggests it may still consider including a disc drive in Project Helix or certain variants, balancing a digital-first strategy against consumer demand for physical media.
