Capcom announced on September 7 that Onimusha: Way of the Sword has sold over 1 million units on its launch day. The game also received strong critical reception, holding an 87% positive Steam review rating and a Metascore of 85. Way of the Sword marks the first new mainline entry in the Onimusha franchise in 20 years, following the 2006 release of Dawn of Dreams.

In its sales announcement, Capcom stated it "is focusing on re-activating IPs that haven't had a new title launch recently" and will work to "further maximize corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content." This signals the company's continued commitment to reviving classic franchises beyond just remakes.

The success of Onimusha: Way of the Sword adds momentum to rumors that Capcom is planning additional retro revivals, including potential remakes like Resident Evil Code Veronica and Resident Evil 1, as well as new installments in beloved series such as Marvel vs. Capcom and Dead Rising.
