Meta has launched a new AI assistant called Muse, which will be available on its smart glasses and other portable devices. The company is betting that these devices will become a primary way consumers interact with AI, despite privacy concerns. Critics have dubbed the camera-toting Ray-Bans “pervert glasses” after intrusive videos surfaced on social media. The glasses have an LED that lights up when recording, but Zuckerberg recently announced a camera-free version with audio-only interaction.

Meta also unveiled new virtual reality glasses, available next spring for $1,300, which are five times lighter than the Quest 3. The Muse assistant will be integrated into the glasses, allowing users to have hyper-realistic digital avatars represent them on video calls. These avatars use hologram technology Meta has developed over years.

Meta hopes Muse will become highly personalized by accessing data from its social platforms, but it must convince users to connect personal data like email and financial apps. The company faces challenges as AI agents can still make errors or go rogue. Meta already issued a fix for a vulnerability that could allow hackers to control another person’s Muse agent, and Amazon has blocked Meta’s agents from its shopping platform.
