SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The San Jose Sharks signed coach Ryan Warsofsky to a multiyear contract extension Thursday, the first day of training camp before his third season. The 37-year-old has a 59-85-20 record, helping the rebuilding team reach the brink of the playoffs.

Warsofsky thanked owner Hasso Plattner, GM Mike Grier and team president Jonathan Becher for his first NHL head coaching shot. "The goal when we took over was to make this team relevant again," he said. The Sharks improved by 34 points last season, the 10th-best jump in 30 years, finishing four points out of the playoffs.

Grier wanted the deal done before the season so Warsofsky could focus on the ice. "It gives him peace of mind," Grier said. Warsofsky is the NHL's youngest active head coach and won gold with Team USA in 2025.

Veteran Tyler Toffoli called him "a very good teacher" and "a great motivator."
