The Yankees routed the Red Sox 16-1, but the game turned on a disputed play in which Boston's Ceddanne Rafaela believed he made a diving catch. Replay upheld the call against him, and the Red Sox unraveled. Boston did get reinforcements for the finale, as Anthony and Story rejoined the lineup after lengthy injury absences. The Yankees also got good news on rookie shortstop George Lombard Jr., who avoided structural damage to his right knee but could still land on the injured list.

Pitching Milestones & Injuries

Max Scherzer delivered a vintage performance, fanning 10 and passing Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry for ninth on the career strikeout list. The Mariners placed right-hander Emerson Hancock on the 15-day IL with a strained adductor, retroactive to August 29. The Twins put outfielder Byron Buxton on the 10-day IL with a hip impingement. St. Louis placed rookie infielder JJ Wetherholt on the 10-day IL with wrist tendinitis.

Walk-Offs & Power Surges

Tampa Bay completed a sweep of San Diego with a 5-4 win, as Jonny DeLuca homered off Miller to tie it in the ninth and Jorge Mateo singled in the winning run in the 11th. Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong added two more homers, giving him five in two days, but Chicago still lost the series to Cincinnati, dropping their third consecutive series.
