Apple has informed developers that universal Mac App Store apps requiring macOS 13 or later can now remove support for Intel-based Mac computers. This change allows developers to simplify their workflow and reduce download and on-device sizes. While apps that drop Intel support will cease delivering updates to those machines, existing Intel Mac users can continue using the last compatible version of the app. Previously, Apple had not permitted developers to discontinue Intel compatibility for Mac App Store apps.

macOS Tahoe remains the final version compatible with Intel-based Macs, while macOS Golden Gate restricts operation to Apple silicon Macs equipped with an M1 chip or newer. Concurrently, Apple is phasing out Rosetta 2, the translation layer enabling Intel apps on Apple silicon. Rosetta will cease functioning for most applications after the Golden Gate release, though exceptions are made for certain older unmaintained gaming titles reliant on Intel frameworks.

This transition marks a significant step in Apple's ongoing platform unification, aligning macOS with its broader strategy of Apple silicon dominance. Developers are encouraged to optimize their apps for the new architecture while maintaining backward compatibility for legacy Intel users.
