Microsoft and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) have signed a legally enforceable agreement to protect student and teacher data from AI training. The deal, announced by AFT President Randi Weingarten, prohibits Microsoft from using school data to train AI models, with narrow exceptions for safety and security. It also bans Microsoft from tracking students and requires human oversight for AI decisions in schools.

The agreement mandates transparency for educators and parents. Weingarten highlighted that this is a "first of its kind" effort, filling gaps left by federal regulations. The protections take effect on November 1, and the AFT is already in talks with OpenAI and Anthropic for similar agreements.

This follows New York City's one-year moratorium on AI for students up to eighth grade, and Los Angeles' broader ban for all public school students.
