If your Android phone has slowed down or you've been getting weird texts, it might have spyware. Android's open ecosystem allows alternative app stores and sideloading, which attracts bad actors using disguised utility apps, fake updates, or phishing texts to deliver spyware. However, spyware rarely operates without leaving clues.

Signs of spyware include sudden performance drops, overheating, fast battery drain, increased data usage, disappearing storage, persistent ads, browser redirects, suspicious texts, unfamiliar apps, or apps requesting camera, mic, or location access.

To remove spyware, run a Google Play Protect scan via the Play Store, install a trusted antivirus like Bitdefender Mobile Security or Malwarebytes, check device administrator permissions in Settings > Security & Privacy, boot into Safe Mode to disable third-party apps, or perform a factory reset if needed.

Prevention includes avoiding sideloading apps, being cautious with links and attachments, and keeping your device updated.
