The Steam Deck is a fantastic gaming handheld, but like any computer it can malfunction. A factory reset is the silver bullet for performance issues, corrupted files, or bugs, and prepares the device for sale. However, it erases everything on internal storage, including games and save files not backed up to Steam Cloud. Before resetting, back up save files, controller layouts, and local data.

To reset via Settings: Press the Steam button, select Settings > System > Advanced > Reset to Factory State. Toggle "Reinstall Steam OS" if troubleshooting; leave it off for a faster wipe when selling. The process takes 10–15 minutes. Remove micro SD cards beforehand and ensure an internet connection for OS reinstallation.

If the device won't boot, use recovery mode: Power off completely (hold power 10 seconds), then hold Power and the "..." button. Release Power after the boot sound but keep holding "..." to enter the Steam OS menu. Select "ERASE USER DATA FROM DECK." The same menu offers a rollback to a previous Steam OS version (retaining user data), though this only lasts until the next restart. Try restarting, updating, or rolling back before a full reset.
