Google will soon reveal more about the first wave of Googlebooks, its new lineup of Android-based laptops. Pre-orders open on September 21, and a "celebration" event called Opening Night will be held in New York City on October 5. The event will feature "interactive showcases and the debut of the first laptop designed for Gemini Intelligence," Google said in an invite.

Googlebooks may start shipping around that time, likely before the holiday shopping season. It's odd to formally show off the laptop weeks after pre-orders start, but more details may come next week.

These AI-centric Googlebooks run on a version of Chrome OS based on Android, offering deep integration with Android phones. Partners Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo are making them. They feature a "glowbar" on the lid and a "Magic Pointer" that suggests contextual actions when you hover over something (enabled by wiggling the cursor). Googlebooks also adopt a feature from Android 17 that lets you generate a custom widget.
