Apple Music Lossless Data Usage: How Much It Consumes

Apple Music Lossless audio can consume significantly more data than standard streaming, potentially exceeding monthly cellular caps. Apple estimates a three-minute song uses about 6MB at High Quality (256kbps AAC), 36MB at Lossless (ALAC, 24-bit/48kHz), and 145MB at Hi-Res Lossless (24-bit/192kHz). Per hour, that translates to roughly 120MB, 720MB, and 2.9GB respectively. Daily one-hour listening at Lossless quality could total 21.6GB monthly, while Hi-Res could approach 87GB. Actual usage varies by song complexity, network conditions, and hardware capabilities, as ALAC compression preserves all original audio data.

To manage data, users can set separate quality tiers for cellular, Wi-Fi, and downloads via Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality. Downloading Lossless tracks over Wi-Fi for offline playback avoids cellular use entirely, ideal for CarPlay connections. However, Bluetooth headphones cannot transmit lossless audio; even AirPods Max 2 only support it via USB-C. Hi-Res Lossless also requires an external DAC. Apple states the audible difference between AAC and lossless is "virtually indistinguishable," suggesting Lossless is best reserved for Wi-Fi or wired setups where the quality can be fully appreciated.
