A 40-page Labor Department watchdog report found former Secretary Lori Chavez-De Remer repeatedly violated policy, tolerated harassment, misused public money for personal travel and had an inappropriate relationship with a security aide. More than three dozen witnesses described the secretary’s office as toxic, intimidating and humiliating after a monthslong investigation triggered by a whistle-blower’s misconduct allegations. The allegations also said Chavez-De Remer and aides abused younger women on staff and exceeded federal spending limits on trips involving luxury hotels, SUV rentals and strip clubs.

Chavez-De Remer resigned in April after one year in the job as scandals and investigations mounted; she did not respond to a request for comment. The report closes a damaging chapter for the Labor Department as acting leader Keith Sonderling awaits Senate confirmation to become the next secretary.
