Apple announced Monday that John Ternus, a mechanical engineer who climbed through the company's hardware engineering division, will become its next chief executive, taking over from Tim Cook. Ternus currently serves as Apple's senior vice president of hardware engineering, overseeing the teams responsible for iPhone, Mac, iPad, and other flagship product development. His appointment becomes effective Sept. 1.

Cook will transition to the role of executive chairman, replacing longtime chair Art Levinson. This leadership change marks the most significant executive transition at Apple since Tim Cook succeeded Steve Jobs in 2011. The move signals a deliberate choice to promote from within the hardware engineering ranks, selecting a leader with deep technical expertise over a background in operations or supply chain management.

The transition comes as Apple faces increasing pressure in key markets, including China and AI development. Ternus, known internally as an affable leader, will now guide the company through an era of intensifying competition and technological disruption. His engineering background represents a different profile than Cook, who built his reputation managing Apple's global supply chain.
