I’ve spent my career writing earnestly about wildfires or insurrections in faraway countries. So when a zany viral moment came across social media a couple weeks ago, I was intrigued when the national editor, Nestor Ramos, texted me. He proposed that we try to capture a moment in American life—a fast-food standoff in the dead of night.

The idea was to write about it in the same humorous way people all over were responding to it. There was something distinctly American—and funny—about a guy jumping through a drive-through window and arming himself with a spatula. It started as a bizarre late-night standoff behind the counter of a fast food joint.

It ended with no injuries—and free burgers.
