Saudi Arabia and the Houthis in Yemen traded accusations of attacks on Tuesday, with reports of casualties on both sides. A Saudi military spokesman said the Houthis targeted three cities in the kingdom, injuring 13 people. The Houthi-run Health Ministry in Sanaa said Saudi airstrikes killed three people, including two children, in Taiz province.

Saudi Civil Defense issued emergency alerts across western cities including Jeddah, Yanbu, Taif, Mecca, and Jeddah again, marking the most widespread alerts in a single day since Yemen fighting intensified. The Houthis have seized key Red Sea territory, including Mokha and Perim Island, threatening shipping lanes. Saudi Arabia leads a coalition fighting to restore Yemen’s government since 2015.

A 2022 truce has unraveled, displacing approximately 125,000 people since September per the U.N. The Houthis have declared a blockade on Saudi shipping and attacked vessels and oil facilities. Analysts say capturing Perim Island gives the Houthis a strategic foothold to threaten maritime trade. Saudi officials said a drone attack on their East-West oil pipeline came from Iraq, which Trump said was “probably” backed by Iran.

Saudi Arabia has sought U.S. military action against the Houthis but was rebuffed by Trump.
