Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway filed an emergency request with the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday, asking the court to allow the state to use a congressional map redrawn to benefit Republicans in the November election. The request came after the Missouri Supreme Court ruled that the map used in the primary election was invalid and that voters should have had a say in the new district lines. Hanaway argued the state court decision "inflicts unprecedented chaos on Missouri" by disenfranchising hundreds of thousands of voters.

The new map, adopted in September 2025 at President Trump's request, divided Kansas City to challenge Democrat Emanuel Cleaver and aimed to improve Republican chances in the 2026 midterms. The state Supreme Court unanimously ruled on Sept. 3 that the map could not take effect without voter approval. Justice Brett M.
