NOTUS Rebrands as The Washington Sun

The nonprofit news outlet NOTUS is changing its name to The Washington Sun after a trademark dispute blocked its earlier plan to become The Star. Editor in chief Tim Grieve said the new name better reflects the outlet's broader coverage of Washington politics and local news.

The rebrand comes as the outlet expands its staff from 45 to 110 people, many of them former Washington Post employees, including food critic Tom Sietsema and columnist Dana Milbank. The growth follows The Post's decision to cut back on local and sports coverage, which Grieve said left a gap the new outlet aims to fill.

Along with the new name, The Washington Sun will introduce a paywall this month, with subscriptions priced at $9.99 a month. Newsletters will remain free. The outlet also secured an exclusive content licensing agreement with Capital Weather, formerly known as Capital Weather Gang, to provide daily weather forecasts for the Washington area.

The name change is the second attempt this year. In May, NOTUS planned to rebrand as The Star, but media executive Dovid Efune, who is reviving the historic Washington Star newspaper, filed a trademark lawsuit. A federal judge ordered NOTUS to suspend its rebrand, and the parties settled on June 18, with NOTUS dropping the Star name.
