Japan's rising yields are drawing record demand for retail government bonds, offering a potential new source of funding just as policymakers seek to contain borrowing costs and reduce market supply.

Retail bond sales climbed 84% year on year to a record ¥5.14 trillion ($33 billion) in the period from April to September, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
