Michael van Gerwen's title defence at the World Series of Darts Finals ended in the first round after a 6-5 defeat to Daryl Gurney. Van Gerwen missed six match darts at 5-4 up before Gurney controlled the decider despite boos from the Amsterdam crowd.

Gurney earned a late call-up after visa issues forced Philippines players Alexis Toylo and Lourence Ilagan to withdraw. He will face Ross Smith, who beat Kevin Doets 6-3.

Luke Humphries battled past Jermaine Wattimena 6-4 and will meet Dirk van Duijvenbode, who recovered from 4-1 down to beat Viktor Tingstrom 6-4.

Josh Rock came back to defeat Stephen Bunting 6-5 and will play Ryan Searle, who cruised past Rob Cross 6-2. Gian van Veen beat Chris Dobey 6-2, and Karel Sedlacek saw off Ben Robb 6-4.

On Friday, Luke Littler, Gerwyn Price, Jonny Clayton, James Wade, and Nathan Aspinall are among those in action.
