OpenAI banned accounts linked to a previously unreported influence operation dubbed "Trolling Stone", which used AI to generate social media comments about the arrest of alleged Russian cult leader Konstantin Rudnev in Argentina. The operation involved coordinated activity across Pakistan, Armenia, Uruguay, Argentina, and Kazakhstan, with some accounts tied to for-hire actors. Users prompted in English and Russian generated pro-Rudnev content and criticisms of Argentina’s legal system and Rolling Stone Argentina in Argentinian Spanish.

Content included fake news articles posted on Facebook pages posing as Argentine outlets, registered in October 2025, with admin locations traced to Uruguay, Armenia, and Pakistan. The operation translated Russian articles about Rudnev into Argentinian Spanish and published them on Facebook, YouTube, Medium, and Argentine news sites. In some cases, AI-generated text was slightly altered to obscure its origin.

Comments on news sites, YouTube, and Medium were generated by multiple accounts to create an artificial grassroots impression, particularly targeting Rolling Stone Argentina after its June article labeled Rudnev an "extravagant guru" and founder of an "exotic and disturbing" cult.
