One year ago, Bluesky Social PBC announced their intention to facilitate an independent organization for the Public Ledger of Credentials (PLC) directory. We are happy to announce the Public Ledger of Credentials Organization now formally exists, and has taken the first administrative steps towards independently operating the directory.\n\nThe PLC directory collects and distributes updates to AT Protocol accounts, identified by strings like did:plc:i65vdx4ylh5ahdjyd7f2gpnp. Updates include handles and PDS hosting choices, signed with cryptographic keys the directory does not control, preventing tampering.

Users can update their keys at any time or create new identifiers.\n\nThe PLC Organization is a registered Swiss Association, governed by its members with no owners or shareholders. Initial board members include Richard Barnes, Thyla van der Merwe, Bryan Newbold, Wendy Seltzer, and Filippo Valsorda. Bootstrap funding came from Bluesky Social PBC.\n\nNext steps include taking over PLC directory assets, defining policies, improving user tools, and diversifying funding.
