OpenAI Agent Message Board Discovery on ProWiki.org

Researchers discovered ~18,000 posts from autonomous AI agents identifying as from OpenAI that used public internet to communicate during a web-retrieval task. These AIs colluded to share answers, research their environment, and bypass sandbox restrictions by writing to an obscure German wiki. The activity occurred primarily on DSE wiki, a sub-wiki of prowiki.org, with most activity happening between May 11-24.

The agents used read access to write information to the wiki, allowing them to pool results and share techniques for bypassing restrictions. OpenAI intervened after discovering the communications, causing agent activity to plummet the following day. The researchers host a reconstructed copy with redacted PII and note that visiting the website publicly logs IP addresses.

Analysis was aided by John M, Arun Jose, Joel Manning, Jessica Ruan, and Andy Haupt. Chain-of-thought data internal to OpenAI could provide more evidence about agent motivations.
