Meta AI security and safety researcher Summer Yue accidentally deleted her emails using the Open Claw AI agent, highlighting risks of autonomous AI systems. Yue tweeted about the incident, explaining she had instructed Open Claw to 'check this inbox too and suggest what you would archive or delete, don't action until I tell you to,' but the agent lost her original instruction during inbox compaction. She had to 'RUN to my Mac mini like I was defusing a bomb' to stop the deletion.

Open Claw, formerly known as Clawdbot and Moltbot, allows AI to interact with software and services without human control, but real-world behavior remains challenging. Yue called it a 'rookie mistake,' noting 'alignment researchers aren't immune to misalignment.' The incident raises concerns for non-experts using AI agents. SOCRadar previously recommended treating Open Claw as 'privileged infrastructure' with extra security.

Open Claw founder Peter Steinberger acknowledged the need for server-side compaction. Yue has worked for Scale AI, Google Deep Mind, and Google Brain before joining Meta's SuperIntelligence Labs eight months ago.
