GLP-1 medications like semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro/Zepbound) may reduce the risk of serious infections, including tuberculosis (TB). Two recent studies found a link between GLP-1 use and lower infection risk, especially in vulnerable groups like people with type 2 diabetes. One study in Nature Communications found that GLP-1 users were significantly less likely to be diagnosed with TB over a five-year period. Another study in the BMJ showed that tirzepatide users had fewer infections requiring hospital stays and lower overall mortality.

These findings suggest GLP-1 drugs may offer benefits beyond metabolic health. The authors of the Nature Communications study noted that GLP-1RAs could confer additional advantages in lowering infection risk. The BMJ researchers speculated that the survival benefit might reflect effects beyond atherosclerotic mechanisms.

Both studies are observational and retrospective, showing correlation but not causation. The potential protection might stem from weight loss and better blood sugar control, as obesity and type 2 diabetes are linked to higher infection risk. More research, including prospective studies and clinical trial data, is needed to confirm this connection.

In the meantime, these findings add to the growing list of potential health benefits from these blockbuster drugs.
